One of my all-time favorite writers once said

"The wit makes fun of other persons; the satirist makes fun of the world; the humorist makes fun of himself, but in so doing, he identifies himself with people--that is, people everywhere, not for the purpose of taking them apart, but simply revealing their true nature."

--James Thurber.

If you've ever read My Life and Hard Times (one of my favorite books), you can see how greatly Thurber's musings have affected my writing. I really believe by telling stories that (lovingly) poke fun at ourselves and family, we reach out to others. Surely everyone can relate to such stories in some way. It's a way that people with seemingly nothing in common can connect. And it's my way of not taking myself too seriously.

So I just wanted to thank all of you that read my blog regularly (and especially those of you that comment as well). Thanks for relating. Thanks for laughing at me. Thanks for sharing your own stories. I can't believe all the fun I've gotten out of this--not from writing, but from discovering other people. We all seem to come from different backgrounds, but we also seem to have a lot in common. And isn't that the whole point?

So thanks again.

Ok, we're done with mushy. Back to happy.

I totally agree, JLR. Sent you an email earlier about this too. y'all are my buds.

You sent me an e-mail? *sniff* nobody sends me e-mails. Yea! I'll go check.

Oh wow, I checked the blog all morning yesterday and nothing. Then I come back today and find out I missed a whole comment party! Well, all I can say is, it is *astounding* how similar our quirks are, JLR. The nasal spray, the chapstick, the hand lotion, the tissues (I keep a ziplock bag of them in my purse as well as one in each of my pants pockets -- that means four when it's the weekend and I'm wearing jeans). Oh yeah, and the flip flops. Quint can tell you how many times I've stood in the shower calling his name because I can not get out without the flip flops.

steve: i think I like it that way better. Especially the "that humorist returns on merry, thus proceeding, it is marked but with people" part.

KP: that is bizarre. But ever since I've been reading your blog, it's kind of freaked me out how much you remind me of me. But the nasal spray, the chapstick, the hand lotion, the tissues (I stash them EVERYWHERE), and, most especially, the flip flops? What are the odds? I mean, really? I am so relieved to know I'm not the only one!

I think the first post of yours I ever read was when you were talking about how sometimes you take the stairs at work because it's too awkward talking with the security guards by the elevator. I was like, "wow, I am *so* glad I'm not the only one who does stuff like that."

Okay, I'll admit it: I'm a nerd. I don't know what "dissed in the Malibu" means.

And Steve, JLR is as mushy as they come, so I don't believe she meant it...And you probably already knew that.

(Good one, RR. Nerd.)

rr, you're so sweet. Don't worry, everyone gets along here. We're just "joshing," as grandpa would say.

or as our friends at google would say:
rr, you are so sweet. One does not worry, each one obtains ahead here. We are "joshing just," because grandpa would say.

[this just doesn't get old to me]

"Dissed in the Malibu" is a random movie quote from one of my favorite movies of all time...
"Say Anything"

Lloyd gets his heart broken in his car and its a Malibu... one of his dude friends utters that line

JLR said...

Hmm. I don't remember that. I just remember the line that RR and I say all the time: "You must chill!"

Katie said...

JLR - you must remember when Lloyd hold up the stereo and it plays, "In your eyes". Every girl remembers that part.

JLR said...

I do remember that part. Also the "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen" line.

Katie said...

Oh that line is perfect. I own that movie and must watch it again, tonight.
